Retaliation occurs when an employer punishes or takes an adverse action against an employee who has reported an employer’s unlawful behavior to authorities. Oftentimes, employers will fire, demote or in some other way punish an employee for the lawful reporting. Employees are free to file charges against an employer and they are protected by the law.
